Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the US. She's been a media critic since 1995. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency a website that provides commentary and videos on the representation of women in pop cultural. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American journalist and critic that has received accolades for her work. She is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency, a website dedicated to education, which examines women's role in the narratives of pop culture was the result of her research. Additionally, she serves as the executive director. The challenge of destroying stereotypes regarding women is the main goals of her work. However, Sarkeesian also highlights issues related to targeted harassment against women online and for other groups which are excluded. Sarkeesian has a degree in social thought and politics from York University. She is also a highly-respected public speaker. Sarkeesian delivered speeches to the TEDxWomen XOXO Fest and United Nations Broadband Working Group. At a young age Sarkeesian was captivated by issues of gender identity and feminist thought. While still at school in 2009 she started her Feminist Frequency Website. Someone who hoped to launch a web-series that would examine the gender-based representation in video games, she was targeted by the internet campaign. However, the attacks did not dissuade her. The experience only strengthened her in her role as a feminist journalist. Numerous awards have been given to her for her contributions to the field she contributed to. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award award-winning journalist. She is also the director and founder of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit organization that explores pop culture depictions of women.
