Khan was brought up as a Catholic. She was educated at her school, the Hyde Park Saint Thomas the Apostle Church elementary school. Her grandmother is the one she credits for getting her into jazz while she was a young. Khan was a rhythm and blues fan in her preteen years. In her twelfth year she joined the Crystalettes along with their sister Taka. She performed in Chicago with Cash McCall and his group Lyfe with Hassan Khan. Chaka got married to Hassan in the year 1970.
